Lorcana - How to Play by Chris Nielson

Lorcana - How to Play by Chris Nielson
Lorcana is taking the TCG world by storm. Ravensburger and Disney have teamed up to create a TCG where you can use characters from Disney, such as the notable Mickey Mouse. Some early kits of the Lorcana TCG cards have already gone for a couple of thousand USD, a good initial indicator of interest in the TCG. The Hype is real!!!

Are you one of the people who love Disney characters and love to collect anything from Disney? Or you want to try out a new game in which you can play as one of your favourite characters. Well, you are in luck. Loot Kingdom has been selected for organized play and will sell Lorcana TCG products in the Barrie region!

With any organized play, you should expect cool promos and Lorcana-sealed products!

To help fellow looters of Loot Kingdom, people who love to spend time at Loot Kingdom, get ready, I have prepared a short "How to Play" article.

If you have played any big TCG like Magic the Gathering, Pokemon, Flesh and Blood or Digimon, picking up this game will be easy. On the other hand, if this is your first time diving into the world of TCG (Trading Card Games), do not be intimidated. This game is perfect for getting into if you have yet to experience playing games of this kind. I will teach you the fundamentals to get started, and by playing yourself with other people at the store, you will learn more in-depth nuances that will keep you coming back for more.

So if you are ready, let's jump head first in the game of...

The game's main objective is to be the first player to collect 20 "Lore" points. Collecting Lore points is done by having character cards go questing; more on this later.

To get set up, you will need a deck of 60 Lorcana TCG cards (this can be easy to get as a starter set will have everything you need), shuffle up your cards and place your deck face down. The area below your shuffled-up deck will be your discard pile, where cards, when you are done using them or are destroyed due to an effect, will go. Now, draw up 7 cards called your hand, and you can play the 3 different kinds of cards; character, items, and action cards.

Character cards: These kinds of cards can do certain things and usually have a Disney character that you most certainly recognize and have two digits in the bottom right of the picture of the card beside the name of the card:

First: be able to quest and gain Lore points.

Second: Be used to add to your inkwell and pay for all your other cards.

Third: Character cards stay in play and cannot be used the turn they are played.

Item cards Are similar to character cards in that they stay in play and are not discarded immediately. There are a few things to keep in mind while using item cards:

First: Unlike character cards, they can be used immediately once played.

Second: It can add to your inkwell to pay for the cost of other cards.

Third: Item cards have special abilities that you must pay attention to and can often help you gain an advantage.

Action cards: Action cards are simple, one-time-use effect cards that go into the discard pile below your deck face-up once done. There are action-song cards which operate the same way as well. Please note this type of card is the only one you cannot add to your Inkwell zone to pay for other cards.

When you take a turn, it goes as follows:

  1. Ready, Set and Draw (except if you are the player going first). ("Ready" is when you turn your cards that you used last turn upright in the portrait mode, and "Exert" is when a card is being used for its effect or to go questing and is turned sideways.) Set is just referring to all start of turn card effects. Draw a card is straight forward, pick a card up from your deck that is face down.
  2. Main phase: You can do anything in any order during your turn. Some of the actions you can take are:
    1. Add 1 card to your inkwell- Inkwell is a zone where you add a card with an inkwell icon in the top left-hand corner of a character or an item card.
    2. You can use the abilities of any item or character card to help you gain an advantage through its effect.
    3. Questing! You can "Exert" and try to gain some Lore points (shown by the diamond-looking image in the card's text box).
    4. Challenge! - This one is cool; you can use your character, maybe a Donald Duck, to attack the other player's character card. The opponent's character card must be "Exerted" to be able to challenge. But why Challenge? To slow your opponent getting their 20 Lore points before you. I have added the official diagram below to figure out how to question.

There are more to the rules of Lorcana, such as if you run out of cards from your deck, you lose as well, but for now, this is a long enough article to read and get the jist of how to play the game and get ready for the release of Lorcana. I hope to see you at Loot Kingdom cracking packs, playing cards, and singing classic Disney songs!
